Food-saving app Bonapp expands partnership with Carrefour Romania in 4 new cities

July 13, 2026

The partnership between Bonapp and Carrefour is taking its fight against food waste beyond the capital city of Romania, Bucharest. Following a successful initial rollout that saved over 5 tonnes of food and sold more than 2,500 Surprise Bags, the initiative is expanding into four new cities: Iași, Cluj-Napoca, Brașov, and Oradea.

Through the Bonapp mobile app, shoppers can buy Surprise Bags filled with two to five products nearing their expiration dates. Available across all store formats, these bags are offered at discounts reaching up to two-thirds off the standard retail price.

The mechanism is straightforward: users download the app, select a Surprise Bag from a nearby Carrefour, and complete the payment digitally. Items can then be picked up at the store's Click & Collect counter or at designated collection areas.

“We want sustainable choices to be convenient and accessible, and the results of the pilot phase in Bucharest showed us that people are open to the surprise bag concept as long as the benefits are clear: quality products at significantly lower prices, rescued directly from their local store. We are confident in this partnership because we know people appreciate great value while also having the opportunity to help reduce food waste,” said Luka Zivkovic, Co-Founder and General Manager of Bonapp.

With this latest rollout, 20 Carrefour locations, including Hypermarket, Market, and Express formats, across Brașov, Cluj-Napoca, Oradea, and Iași have joined the Bonapp platform.

The variety of Surprise Bags has also grown. Depending on current availability, shoppers can select from options like Butchery, BBQ, For Your Fridge, Snacks & Treats, Party, and Ready to Eat.

While the exact assortment depends on the store format, the core concept stays the same: larger locations offer a wider selection, ranging from four bag types in Express stores up to six in hypermarkets. Every bag contains between two and five heavily discounted products.

“Today’s customers are constantly looking for added value, and as a retailer, our role is to provide innovative and accessible solutions. Expanding our collaboration with Bonapp strengthens our e-commerce ecosystem by adding a sustainable dimension to Carrefour’s value proposition. Our customers can now save food while also protecting their household budgets, benefiting from a fast and seamless digital experience. It is clear proof that technology and care for the community can go hand in hand,” said Narcis Horhoianu, Chief Marketing Officer & E-commerce, Carrefour Romania.

Since the collaboration began, Carrefour shoppers have bought more than 2,500 Surprise Bags. This collective effort has rescued over 5,100 kilograms of food and averted 12.9 tonnes of CO₂ emissions, an environmental impact equal to driving roughly 32,000 kilometers.
